A 23-year-old software engineer disappeared from her office. The woman R Lavanya, a resident of Mela Ayanambakkam near Thiruverkadu, went to her office in Ambattur on Sunday night and she left her office at 9am on Monday and then she never turned up home.
However, Lavanya's father Raja received a call at 12.45pm on Monday and the call was originated from Lavanya's mobile. A male voice spoke to Raja and he claimed Lavanya was in his custody and she was safe.
After discussing with her family members, Raja lodged a formal complaint at Thiruverkadu police station on Monday evening to trace his missing daughter.
Police personnel immediately swung into action and started probing for the missing woman. After verifying her call records, it was last traced near Chinmaya Nagar in Koyambedu and then it was switched off.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Lavanya often traveled in a cab from her house in Thiruverkadu to her office in Ambattur. She developed friendship with the cab driver Manikandan, as per the witnesses of her friends who worked with her.
Police personnel verified the whereabouts of the cab driver Manikandan. His mobile was also turned off at the same time from the same place near Koyambedu. Police suspect that the woman may have eloped with the cab driver. However police personnel are also probing into the angle if she was kidnapped by the cab driver without her consent.
Thiruverkadu police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the missing software engineer and the suspected cab driver.
